Report on the
Spring
Central District Conference
April 16, 2010 -
Jamestown “Bound for
Glory: Promoting Prosperity in Your County”
By Bob Steele, CCPCA Central Representative
A team of five put together
what turned out to be a very informative, interesting and
entertaining conference in the beautiful community of Jamestown.
Tuolumne County Community Development Director, Bev Shane,
Tuolumne County Planning Commission Secretary, Chris Mongsene,
CCPCA Past President, Jerry Morrow, CCPCA President Elect,
Charlotte Hague and I all participated to bring this conference
to the Central District with the assistance of CCPCA Executive
Director, Renee' Lederer. Jamestown was chosen for the
location, as it is an excellent example of a community which,
through a concerted effort, has maintained its heritage while
promoting its assets. It has conserved and revitalized
historic architecture. It enhances the draw for a unique
Historic State Park - Railtown 1897. It also provides
authentic sites for the film industry. Many TV and film
companies have utilized Tuolumne County for their productions.
The conference program was put
together to provide an example of how varied interests can work
together to build on what you have and make it viable both
currently and for the future. There were presentations
which spoke to historical preservation, economic viability, the
current political climate, cooperation between special interests
and community leaders, and how to promote your best qualities.
The presentations were outstanding for both content and
timeliness.
These topics were enhanced by
the locations chosen for the conference. Presentations were
at Azzo's Restaurant, an excellent example of utilizing the
historic interior of a building to provide a fine dining and
meeting experience - the room was open and bright. The
lunch at The National Hotel provided another example of historic
architecture with a more intimate yet expansive flair. The
room had an historic ambience and it easily accommodated our
group while providing easy access to those hearing our featured
speaker, State Senator Dave Cogdill. Senator Cogdill gave
an informative speech on both the state of the State and current
water legislation.
If these items weren't enough,
the afternoon also included a trolley ride, a walking tour of how
Jamestown represents the realization of the theme of this
conference, a docent guided tour of Railtown 1897 State Historic
Park, and then a wine tasting reception at La Petite Maison with
wines from Gianelli Vineyards. La Petite Maison is another
example of a retail establishment blending into and enhancing an
historic setting.
All of this was put together
within a very short amount of time through proactive teamwork.
Then the weather cooperated brilliantly to provide the perfect
setting for what turned out to be a unique and exciting Spring
Conference. Those who attended were not disappointed and
everyone involved should be very proud of this organizational
effort. Plan to attend a CCPCA event!
